The Discovery Edit By Johanna Ferreira

While quarantine has become much more of a lifestyle these days than a temporary way of living, it's also undoubtedly affected our skin. Being indoors and constantly in front of our smartphones, computer screens, and tablets, has left many of us with duller, drier, and flakier complexions.

“Blue light from gadgets contributes to potential skin harm like brown spots, skin aging, hyperpigmentation, redness, and collagen breakdown, which leads to wrinkles and skin laxity,” naturopathic doctor,” Dr. Nigma Talib tells thirteen lune.

“According to studies, spending four 8-hour workdays in front of a computer exposes us to the same amount of energy as 20 minutes in the midday sun. It is comparable to seven minutes of sun exposure at noon. It is powerful enough to induce immediate tanning. Nevertheless, these effects are not always noticeable right away — the damage is cumulative.”

Talib explains that being indoors for long periods of time can also strip skin of its natural oils and disrupt the pH balance, leaving skin dry as well as irritated. It can also play a part in vitamin D deficiency.

“Over 40% of American adults may have a vitamin D deficiency and that’s a lower percentage in my opinion, considering the references ranges are suboptimal. The body naturally products vitamin D in response to exposure to sunlight,” Dr. Nalib says.

“The higher presence of melanin reduces the body’s ability to produce vitamin D, which is critical for our immune system.”

Fortunately, there are ways to achieve and maintain a healthy and glowy complexion even during these challenging and unprecedented times with a few changes to your skincare regimen.
